Enterprise News and Pictures 10/6/19 Pic shows: Children's nurse Lucy Letby, 28, who has been re-arrested for the attempted murder of three babies after she was first arrested last July on suspicion of murdering eight babies and attempting to murder another six at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Cheshire Police said last year Letby's arrest was a significant step forward in an investigation into deaths at the hospital. Officers had been investigating the deaths of 17 newborns at the neonatal unit between March 2015 and July 2016. A spokesman said the probe also covered 15 "non-fatal collapses." The cases being investigated involve families from the Cheshire and north Wales area. Police were searching her home in Westbourne Road, Chester, about a mile from the hospital, in connection with the investigation. Last year neighbours said a woman lived at the house and had moved in about two years ago. Det Insp Paul Hughes said the investigation was highly complex and very sensitive and officers were doing "everything we possibly can to try to establish in detail what has led to these baby deaths and collapses". Ms Letby, originally from Hereford, had been on bail since July after her home in Chester was searched by police. A spokesman for the Countess of Chester Hospital said it was "co-operating fully" with the investigation. Nurse Lucy Letby, 30, appeared in court today accused of murdering eight babies and with attempting to murder 10.

She was originally arrested in 2018 and 2019 during a probe into deaths at the neo-natal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The allegations relate to deaths of babies and non-fatal incidents between June 2015 and June 2016.

In court Letby spoke confirming her name, address and date of birth only during a brief hearing.

Letby, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, is accused of murdering five baby boys named as Cemlyn Bennett, Joseph Johnson, Barney Gee, Joseph Gelder and Eli Gelder and three girls named as Elsie McNall, Daisy Parkin and Maddie Freed. Letby is also accused of the attempted murder of Maddie Freed and another nine babies whose identities are not permitted to be reported.

Cheshire Police launched an investigation in May 2017 into the deaths of 17 babies and 16 non-fatal collapses at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Earlier this week the force said the parents of all the alleged victims were being supported by police and being kept up to date on developments in the investigation.

Letby was remanded in custody after appearing at Warrington Magistrates’ Court to appear at Chester Crown Court tomorrow (Friday).
