Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveils in a 7pm TV address to the nation his ‘conditional plan’ to reopen society in Britain. He announced his battle plan tonight against the Covid-19 pandemic which will grant people in England more time to spend outdoors from Wednesday.
He also told the nation people who could not work from home should return to the workplace but avoid public transport. He also said a new Covid Alert System with five levels would govern how quickly lockdown restrictions could be eased and hoped that some primary school children could return to school by June 1.
Boris Johnson said this date would also be when he hoped shops would reopen but it would depend on the scientific feedback. July 1st would be the earliest date to see other public places reopening and hospitality businesses. These steps would form part of the “first sketch of a roadmap for reopening society,” he stated, adding: “This is not the time simply to end the lockdown this week. Instead we are taking the first careful steps to modify our measures.”
The Prime Minister also said that fines for the “small minority” who flout lockdown rules will increase.
